It's a small detail amidst the craziness that is the rest of 252, but I'm losing my absolute mind at the fact that Past Allen was apparently soldier.
We just had it confirmed that our protagonist, our child soldier protagonist, had a whole previous life that he lived and completely forgot about. He had a whole first life where, until he was at least an older teenager, he had nothing to do with the inescapable holy war that's taken over his existence the second time around. He was just some kid with no connection to the battle between the Noah and the Black Order.
But what was he instead? Was he free to actually have a childhood in this other life?
Nope! He was just a normal soldier in some non-spiritual, completely mundane war, and he would have died in battle if Nea hadn't swept in and drafted him into the holy war instead. There is no life in which the young Allen is not a soldier.
#fits well with the themes I suppose. esp the themes of the bookman and lavi stuff#history is nothing but an inescapable endless cycle of wars#me when the 'tragedy about child soldiers' manga is a tragedy about child soldiers#stick figure violence gnawing on wood dot jpeg#dgm#d.gray-man#dgm spoilers#dgm 252#allen walker

Spoilers for Nightwing #50/69 and Joker War
I was reminded of this during my re-read of Tom Taylor's Nightwing. But anyone else just a little annoyed so many people seemingly forgot Dick's amnesia and Ric Grayson wasn't from KGBeast?
I mean, yes, the bullet in his head definitely didn't help and it was the catalyst for essentially everything that happened after, but it wasn't the actual cause for his prolonged memory issues-- it was Dr. Isabella Haas, the doctor who had been treating his brain injury since Day 1 who oops was actually a member of the Court of Owls with access to a magical crystal that could warp someone's sense of identity (Nightwing #69). Yeah that might be important.
"I built a new you inside your mind, Richard." I don't know about you, but with an admission like that, it seems pretty clear to me who's responsible here.
But then I see so many comments like "I'll never forgive KGBeast for Ric Grayson" and ??? Literally the moment Dick gets a hold of that crystal and uses it, his memories return to him. This was 100% a Court of Owls thing. And I thought this misconception was only fandom at first, but Tom Taylor totally glosses over this too in Nightwing #91.
Hello? I know Joker War didn't get the best reception, but we're ignoring some pretty significant context here! And if you know Nightwing, then you know just how important he is to the Court of Owls. Gray Son of Gotham anyone? There was a whole prophecy about him. The Court has been after him for years. But yeah sure, let's just throw that away and put all the blame on KGBeast.
#spoilers#joker war#dc comics#nightwing#dick grayson#ric grayson#court of owls#gray son#gray son of gotham#kgbeast#btw#dick still has every right to be mad at him#i would be pretty mad too if someone shot me in the head lol#he was the reason for needing the doctor in the first place#i'm not arguing that point#it's just everyone and taylor ignoring such an important plot#especially taylor cause like#how are you supposed to write a character with depth#if you ignore their traumas and history#but i digress#ronan cliquet#geraldo borges#dan jurgens#tom taylor

Something something the leitmotif that plays when we see Robert Oppenheimer immersed in the forces of modernity shaping the world in the early part of the century, the leitmotif that shows us that physics was the avant-garde, lunging forward into the new history as wild and brilliant as the work of Picasso and Eliot and Stravinsky, the leitmotif that shows the awesome blessing of vision
is the same leitmotif that plays three hours later, when we see what has become of the world. What may become of the world. What hangs over the audience like a sword and Oppenheimer like an eagle returning every day. The same motif for the same actual thing: the endless charge of history, modernity, the destiny of the 20th century, something that was cracking open like a new birth and also doomed to crack open like a fissure in the earth.
(Because history is sometimes more elegant than narrative, many scientists at Trinity had their backs to the explosion, and were told to only look around through a welder’s glass, to prevent damage to their eyes.)
It’s a question posed by the score itself: can you unsee the hidden world? Can you unlearn Cubism, can you say Eliot’s hollow men weren’t the shape of things to come? The physics of the bomb were uncovered, not created. Is the deeply human act of seeing, of reaching to understand, the transcendent spark of something beautiful? Or is it, for this man, in this time, something profoundly unholy?
Light is both a wave and a particle. And it’s the same music in both scenes.

I don't know what I love more, the fact that as rook you can make a statement in NO uncertain terms that you are NOT responsible one way or the other for the theological implications of the shit you're discovering in the 'regrets of the dread wolf' memories. not my jurisdiction. quite simply none of my business. not my chantry circus not my chantry monkeys. irrelevant to the matter at hand here we'll kill that god if we get to him he can get in line. or if the best thing about it is seeing the lone little 'lucanis approves' that pops up right after choosing it. corvid with a knife about to commit deicide keeping it real and sensibly, pragmatically, wilfully agnostic with me here in this magical lighthouse today
#we do not see it. we cannot read all of a sudden.#rye having war flashbacks to watcher conferences and firmly going 'we are *not* getting derailed by the metaphysics here folks'#rare stern moderator/dad hat moment from ingellvar lol. he's Seen Some Shit in his time (debates that raged over the multiple#and not always concurrent life times of the participants involved. ain't no academic rivalry like watcher academic rivalry#because watcher academic rivalry doesn't stop even when everyone involved is dead. and the rest of us have to live with it)#I. do not think the way I'm getting this quest is how it's meant to be experienced so I'm a bit at a loss as to how to pace it out#I've been an annoying little completionist so I have ALL the statues and could just marathon it out#but that does not feel like the best way for the story and upcoming reveals to work. hm. how to do this#I'm supposed to go fail to save weisshaupt right around now I can't be having study group with all of you rn as much of a delight as it is#rye is nominally an andrastian as mainstream nevarrans generally are but as I gather is the case with many of the watchers#what he *actually* believes in is the grand necropolis itself haha#(and the philosophy of history memory death and relationship (as well as responsibility) between the past and the present#and indeed the future that it represents. we have a duty. to what has been to what is and to what will come after us. good shit)#the nevarran/mortalitasi element just makes their lack of care or respect for chantry orthodoxy *mwha* that extra bit special#the nevarran lack of concern bordering on quiet condescending disdain for official chantry doctrine and policy my beloved#dragon age#dragon age: the veilguard#dragon age: the veilguard spoilers#dragon age spoilers#poor harding really is living through the most relentless 'if this is the maker testing my faith he sure be testing me' gauntlet of all tim#good news: god might be real! bad news: god might not even be a real thing but more like a magical accident or vibration or something#honestly tho. if we could get full lovecraftian incomprehensible to human conception the maker -- He is a particle and a wave style --#that's the only way I'd be cool with him or them actually answering the question of his existence. that'd be kind of sick#'yes. but no. but maybe. depends on how you define god. and exist. and he. and does.' *ingellvar sets of the METAPHYSICS!! klaxon#that's a time out folks good game but easy on the jargon and navel-gazing definition of terms next round#rye and lucanis have some slightly differing views about at what exact stage of a problem murder becomes a valid solution#('well you just kill them and then I'm the one who has to deal with the next much longer part')#but they're surprisingly kind of vibing on a lot of other stuff lol. good for them <3#oc: Ellaryen Ingellvar

Alicent misunderstanding Viserys…. Aemond not meaning to kill Lucerys…. Daemon not actually telling B&C to go after Helena and the kids….
#I suppose this could be commentary on how fire & blood and history in general doesn’t allow for nuance#and with certain things I can understand that#but also#misunderstanding is such a frustrating and frankly annoying trope#I would’ve preferred Alicent say fuck Viserys and that’s why she made the choice she did#or daemon actually making that choice#obviously I have to wait to see how it all plays out on screen#but just generally a little irked with that reoccurrence#a lack of agency#alicent hightower#house of the dragon#hotd#hotd spoilers#season 2 hotd

So, my family is rewatching Rings of Power, and since I’m the one in the family that read The Silmarillion (like a masochist), I’m the one who keeps getting asked all the questions.
#‘did this happen?’ well broadly speaking yes but Tolkien never fleshed this part of middle-earth’s history out in much detail#but I know exactly where they got the idea for whatever it is most of the time#‘is Galadriel’s husband really dead’ of course not#‘did Sauron ever go by the name Halbrand?’ well not really but also how much time do you have because this is going to take some explaining#‘is that Gandalf?’ almost definitely but they’re doing the blue wizard thing with him by taking him to Rhun#also I think they’re making him the basis for the hobbit’s ’man in the moon’ song so I’m honestly okay with it#‘is the Queen lady’s nightmare significant’ Yes three times over but how am I supposed to say anything about it#without giving away what’s probably a season finale#‘what’s with the mithril?’ Hell if I know I’m as confused as you are about that#actually the Galadriel’s husband one was funny#because of course Celeborn shows up in the movies#but my mom wasn’t sure that was actually her husband#or some random blorbo#or a second husband#which then opened up the whole conversation#to how the elves are painfully monogamous even when their spouse dies#because they way they die is weird and also#they all still have generational and firsthand trauma from the fallout of that one elf guy who did get remarried#rings of power spoilers

real talk though, the culmination of ezra’s character arc in the rebels finale is one of the most heartachingly beautiful and fulfilling things i’ve ever seen, it never fails to make me cry.
rebels fans have been waiting five years! to find ezra and see him reunite with his family. in-universe, ezra himself has been waiting a whole decade to be found and return home. and to have it FINALLY happen, only to give us the most lackluster, anticlimactic, emotionless reunions? and then to not even show him meeting kanan’s son either? it’s cheap and lazy writing/directing, and it’s just so disrespectful to fans who have waited so long for it.
#the best reunion (imo) was chopper’s reaction to seeing him#sabine’s reaction with him lacked emotion and there was no feeing of shared history#hera’s reunion with him somehow was even more emotionally empty and we didn’t even get a hug to help!#ahsoka’s reunion with him was fine i suppose (but lbr that’s not the reunion we were all truly waiting for)#no meeting jacen no reunion with zeb#it’s just so upsetting#fucking god forbid we spend two seconds to let characters interact with each other in a meaningful way#ezra bridger#ahsoka series#ahsoka spoilers#ashowka negativity#swr#filoni critical

having shrimp emotions abt the end of shb again
#the nemesis speaks#swift plays ff14#ffxiv spoilers#for the tags i'm sure i'll say something spoiler-y here#anyways AAAHGUGH.... wailing sobbing etc...#the way you fight HADES and not emet-selch at the end...#the way it's a climactic epic clash and a battle over the right to history#but it's ALSO the two of you kicking and screaming against an end that seems inevitable#his facade falling away piece by piece bc it's been so long and he's so tired and WHY DOES IT STILL HURT SO MUCH#AND WHY WON'T YOU JUST LET HIM WIN! YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO BE-#and he's so ANGRY at you for daring to 1) exist and 2) not side with him#the fact that he was friends with azem AND venat and they're both dead or functionally dead now#and you are alive and you carry their legacy and you DARE to keep defying him. (THEY keep defying him.)#it's best for everyone. he wants them back. why won't they let him fix it.#he's ssooooooo.#and then ardbert i could write a whole second fucking tag essay about HIM. everything to me.#anyway. i cannot in good conscience tell anyone to play shb bc you have to slog through a lot of ''just okay'' mmo content to get there#and also it spensive kinda#but WAUGH i wish ppl saw my VISION

i have some Thoughts about the claire plotline obviously and i actually genuinely like her as a person but i dislike her character wherein i don’t like the fact that they introduced her with the sole purpose of being carmy’s love interest and posing as a conflict for the restaurant? considering she’s supposed to be a childhood friend of carmy’s and grew up with the rest of the berzatto family i wish she had gotten the chance to be developed and fleshed out as her own character instead of just being used as a plot device. the buildup of her and carmy’s relationship was definitely very abrupt but in a show that revolves around (found) family it just felt very out of place for us to be introduced to a character with explicit romantic intent like that
#won’t be going into why i think it’s uncharacteristic for carmy because i’m sure other people have already pointed it out as well#but yea there was that too#when we got showed the scene of them running into each other in the season trailer i was getting the romantic Vibes but i was like surely#they won’t go that way.. and when they were obviously Going That Way i was like ????#might write a full thinkpiece later but yea i don’t hate claire. but i hate that her character only exists to serve a purpose and not as a#stand-alone. like maybe she’ll get fleshed out a bit later but it felt very cheap and tacky#for them to drop the ‘oh actually she and carmy have always known each other and they’ve always liked each other’ lore during e6#especially in a show where every character is very lovingly fleshed out and developed and given this sense of familiarity? like in the pilot#when we see richie and sugar for the first time even though we’re not explicitly told what their relation is to carmy the sense of#familiarity and history is there. we didn’t get that click with claire and i get they were supposed to be estranged but…?#my txt#the bear spoilers

sorry if you've already been asked this but what did you think about eiji in iw? like idk i feel like they were trying to recreate a masato and ichi moment without actually having any of the elements that made their relationship narratively compelling.
as a whole, i thought eiji was at least a nice 'how he wished things couldve been' for ichi in regards to masato, but still being independent enough from the masato comparison to stand on his own as a character (or at least as an antagonist. his actions wasn't what was reminding me he was a masato parallel, but more so ichi's insistence he help him). i think thats why ichi and eiji's relationship don't have the same 'elements' that make their relationship interesting like masato and ichi's
#iw spoilers#not really but lol#snap chats#like what made masato and ichi interesting was their family dynamic and how they were narrative foils to each other#eiji isn't supposed to be that. both in-universe and meta wise he's just meant to remind ichi of masato not wholly replace him#and not replace who masato was in ichi's life. just yk. trick him for a bit fJALKAJ#i mean sure you can still find their relationship uninteresting with that in mind so just to me i thought it was cute at the very least#at least in that you can see ichi trying his hardest to connect with eiji#like you can tell he just doesn't want history to repeat even if he's mostly projecting his fears onto eiji#and the situation is not. equivocal LMAO but i digress#i don't feel strongly about eiji one way or another- i mean i liked how it was easy to tell he was going to be an antagonist vjlKJAJ#i dont mind that kind of thing though. i like being able to pick up on things being Not Right with a character or situation#so it was neat seeing how that culminated. still confused on what he was blackmailing chitose with but i assume it's family related#sometimes i think about how beau says eiji and ebina were meant to be rgg feeling bad about killing aoki and it makes me chortle vjalkvjla#anyway thats the end of my eiji prattle. oh ps i like how he actually had a chair that doesnt look painful to sit in#veyr cringe he turned out Not to be disabled but listen if i start talking about masato's disability again im gonna lose my mind#as i frantically close my thirty tabs about lung diseases/conditions and lung transplants and patients' anecdotes post operation

I can't believe Janelle Monae is the new Mona Lisa! Couldn't have happened to a more deserving gay!!
#glass onion#janelle monae#glass onion spoilers#helen brand#rian johnson#original#her work means so much more to me than literally any classical painting ever has#hell. the same could be said of their face - truly as a person a work of art#in my opinion the movie basically does end by saying wake up boys new Mona Lisa just dropped!#and I love it. I love the music. I love that art history nerds confirmed it is supposed to be the real Mona Lisa#I love this movie making the statement that no piece of property could possibly be worth more than human life#and juxtaposing a lifeless painting with a person who is very much living and taking action and improving the world#and I love the way that the Mona Lisa looks almost as though she approves of it in the way Helen looked at her approvingly earlier on.#it's like these two women are sharing a knowing smile across centuries#but it is the real and living one who has something to fight for#I'm STILL on my third watch of the movie because I have to pause every 10 minutes to post about it on Tumblr#I simply have to there's no other way! 😅#i regret nothing.
